Federer safe to 3rd round at the Australian Open

Another good performance for Roger Federer that had to tame an in-form Jan-Lennard Struff in the Australian Open 2nd round. Ranked no. 55, the German has a massive serve and a great attacking game. Roger’s artillery is definitely superior, but still, the Maestro was well aware that he had to be careful.

After winning the first 2 sets without much struggle, the world no.2 was broken by the German in the 4th game of the 3rd set (1-3). Eventually, Roger managed to get that break back in the following game (2-3) before winning the following tiebreak at 4. Federer won the match 6-4 6-4 7-6 (4) after playing 1 hour and 56 minutes.

I knew he was dangerous. FEDERER

During the on-court interview, Roger commented

“I’ve practiced with him and played against him in doubles and singles. You know he can serve 215 or 220 kph for five hours, so that’s what you have to be ready for. I had to protect my own serve and get the break with a good defense.

It wasn’t easy. There’s an expectation on the underdog, but it was a good match, and I wish him the best for the season.”

Next vs. Gasquet

Roger will face Richard Gasquet in the 3rd round. The head to head is 16-2 for Federer (7-0 on hard courts).
