Jelena Ostapenko wins a fantastic 1st round in Melbourne after playing great tennis against Francesca Schiavone.
The Italian veteran was a tricky test for the Latvian as Francesca was expected to mix up her tennis to make Ostapenko uncomfortable. Eventually, Jelena was too good with her shot making to concede just 5 games and win the contest 6-1 6-4.

Soon after the match, Jelena commented
“I knew before the match that it’s not going to be easy. She’s very experienced player, and she’s very long time on tour. I knew I had to play really aggressive and stay very consistent.”
Next vs. Ying-Ying Duan
Jelena will face Ying-Ying Duan in the 2nd round. Ranked no.84, the Chinese had a smashing start of her Australian Open campaign after she defeated Mariana Duque-Marino 6-0 6-1 in the 1st round. They have never played each other.
