De Minaur now in the Sydney final

There was a lot of debate at the beginning of the season about who would be the man in 2018, well so far that’s (little known) Alex De Minaur.

The 18-year-old from Australia has started his season as world no.209, and he has reached the semifinal in Brisbane and now the final in Sydney. He has a fantastic 7-1 win-loss record, and since the beginning of the year, he has defeated top players such as Johnson, Raonic, Verdasco, Lopez, and now Paire.

Alex had an astonishing match in the Sydney semifinal against Benoit Paire to demolish the Frenchman after he lost the opening set. In fact, after losing the first set, the Australian conceded just 2 games in the 2nd and 3rd set to win the match 4-6 6-1 6-1 in 1 hour and 49 minutes.

From Alex

The youngster commented

“I was a set down with not a lot of belief in me, and this crowd just picked me up, picked my intensity up and got me over the line.

I just tried to be tough. I tried to find a way to just keep making balls and just trying to be that blue wall. Once I got on court I tried to make the most out of this occasion and I’m glad I came out with the win.”

The final vs. Medvedev

De Minaur will face fellow #nextgen player Daniil Medvedev in the final. The Russian has defeated Fabio Fognini in the other semifinal. Alex and Daniil have never played each other so far at pro level. This should be first of many.
