Zverev loses to Goffin before winning the Hopman Cup tie

Weird day for Sascha Zverev in Perth.

The German sensation was eager to get back to competitions after the offseason, but his comeback wasn’t as glorious as he hoped at the Hopman Cup.  Sascha is partnering with Angelina Kerber and they faced Team Belgium in their first tie.

Zverev was brushed aside by David Goffin in his first match of the year 6-3 6-3. After losing the first set, the German seemed to have an opportunity to bounce back in the second after he was leading 2-0, but Goffin managed to impose his superior tennis to win the match in straight sets.

Angelique Kerber managed to make things even after she won a tough match against Elise Mertens 7-6 (6) 7-6 (1).

Eventually, everything came down to the mixed doubles that the Germans won 4-2 4-3 (2).
