Denis Shapovalov was little known before 2017.
During last season, the 18-year-old from Canada has captured the fantasy of many tennis fans after a couple of deep runs at the Rogers Cup and at the US Open.
In Montreal, Denis stunned the likes of Juan Martin Del Potro and Rafael Nadal before losing in the semifinals to Sascha Zverev after putting a fierce fight. Later Shapovalov reached the 4th round at the US Open coming straight from the qualifications after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on the way and in straight sets.
What about being famous?
During a recent interview, Denis confessed that he was both pleased (but also a bit overwhelmed) for being recognized all over the places to comment
“It was really cool, I got pretty famous quite quickly, especially in Toronto. A couple of weeks after the US Open I was trying to walk around the malls in Toronto, and I kept getting stopped.
Fortunately, now it’s died down a bit, and I’m able to go places again. But it’s been really interesting and a lot different going from just being a regular high school student, to having your face on magazines and being talked about, it’s been pretty overwhelming to be honest.”
