Martina Hingis to retire at the end of this week.

Martina Hingis had a weird, but extremely successful career that spanned across 3 periods.

1st period

The Swiss became the world no.1 when she was only 16 in 1997. In the same year, she won the Australian Open, Wimbledon, the US Open and she was the runner-up at the French Open.

Eventually, Martina retired in 2003 when she was just 22 because of her injuries (ligaments) with 40 single and 36 titles.

2nd period

Martina tried to come back in February 2015 in Pattaya, but she lost in the opener, and she confirmed she didn’t want to compete anymore. Once more, the Swiss changed idea, and she staged another comeback in 2006 to reach the quarters at the Australian Open where she won the title in the mixed doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi.

Unfortunately, Martina was found positive for cocaine in 2007, and she was suspended for 2 years. After the sentence, the Swiss decided to call it a career again.

3rd Period

In 2013 Martina came out from retirement once more to focus on playing doubles (“traditional” and mixed). This was an extremely successful period with the Swiss winning 10 slams and 1 tour finals. She also reached the world no.1 rank.

The communicate

Martina released the following comments

“I think now it’s definite. It’s different, because before I walked away thinking I might come back. After a season like this, I think it’s also perfect timing. You want to stop on top and not when you’re already going backward.I couldn’t ask for a better finish.

This isn’t a goodbye. As history shows, I haven’t been able to stay away from tennis for long in the past, and I am looking forward to seeing what new opportunities and challenges lie ahead of me.”

Martina is still competing at the finals with her doubles partner Chan Yung-jan in Singapore.
