Tianjin, China. Maria Sharapova finally wins her first title after 2015. The Russian beauty didn’t have a fantastic comeback after her long ban (doping) even if she took full advantage of the controversial wildcards granted by the various tournaments around the world. Before Tianjin, Maria had a grim 11-6 win-loss record in 2017; she has never managed to reach a final for the entire year, and she got back in the top100 only in the last few weeks. Things got different in Tianjin where Maria won the title without conceding a single set on the way.
The final
Maria had to face Belarus’ hope Aryna Sabalenka (ranked 102) in the final, and the match wasn’t easy. In fact, Maria managed to win the contest in straight sets, but only after recovering 2 huge deficits in the 1st and the 2nd set when she was respectively 1-4 and 1-5 down. Eventually, the former world no.1 won the match 7-5 7-6 (8).
This is Maria’s 36th title and one of the most important of her career.
