Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu has had an incredible 2019. She recently won the US Open final against Serena Williams defeating the famous tennis star in two sets to claim her maiden Grand Slam title. At the beginning of the year, Andreescu was ranked 178 in the world. She has since gone on to enjoy success on the WTA tours and Grand Slam tournaments. After winning the US Open she is currently ranked as the 5th best player in the WTA rankings. Her rapid rise from unknown teenager to Grand Slam champion has surprised many in the game and comparisons to Serena Williams have begun to emerge as many see Andreescu as the next dominant star of the sport.
Inspiration to many people
Speaking after winning the US Open, Andreescu has praised Serena Williams as one of her idols growing up. She noted that Serena has been an inspiration for many girls around the world to take up tennis and that she was no exception. Andreescu said, “I’m sure I’m not the only person that’s looked up to her. She’s an inspiration to many, many people, not only athletes. What she’s done off the court, too. She’s truly a champion. Above all, she’s very kind-hearted.” Andreescu revealed that she had spoken to Serena after the match who encouraged her to keep going. “She came up to me in the locker room, she said some really nice things, which I’ll cherish for a really, really long time,” Andreescu.
I can be even better than Serena
Comparisons between Serena’s game and Andreescu have been made. Asked how their games compare, Andreescu admitted to trying to model her game after Serena’s. Andreescu replied when asked about the comparisons, “I’ve really strived to be like her. We like to keep the points short with our aggressive game style. We like to use our serve to our advantage. I think we fight really, really hard.” Despite the similarities, Andreescu expressed interest in forging her own career path and name and maybe one day surpass Serena’s achievements. “But at the same time, I want to make a name for myself. Who knows? Maybe I can be even better.”
Incredible 2019
Andreescu has had an incredible 2019. She won the Indian Wells Open and the Rodgers Cup in Toronto this year. Her latest achievement of winning the US Open made her the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. She has a long way to go before she can surpass Serena who has 23 Grand Slam titles and is currently looking to tie Margret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles.
