Serena Williams will retire in… JOHN MCENROE

When Serena will retire according to John McEnroe

Seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe predicts the retirement of Serena Williams from playing professional tennis in 2020. According to the American tennis legend, he couldn’t imagine Serena playing past next year. He made the prediction after Serena’s loss in the US Open final to Bianca Andreescu.

Serena breaking Margaret Court’s record

McEnroe said that he’d be surprised if Serena plays beyond that year. He feels that Serena needs to win a Grand Slam next year if she still wants to play professional tennis. With 23 Grand Slam titles under her belt, McEnroe believes that it’s already an accomplishment even if she she is 1 major shy from Margaret Court. He said it would be nice to break records but if she didn’t Serena would still be the greatest anyway.

The loss to Bianca Andreescu was Serena Williams’ fourth consecutive loss in a Grand Slam final. Serena has now lost in both the Wimbledon and US Open finals in the last two years.

With the Olympic Games scheduled next year, McEnroe sees Serena retiring by the end of 2020. Another tennis legend, Martina Navratilova, shared McEnroe’s sentiments saying it would be hard for Williams to come back after her straight-set defeat to Andreescu.

Navratilova on Serena loss to Andreescu

Navratilova believes that Williams will keep on trying but her latest defeat will hurt the most compared to others. She said that during the US Open final, everything was pointing to Serena winning and almost turned it around when she came back from 5-1 to 5-5. At that point, Williams was the plausible favorite.

Navratilova said that Serena didn’t play badly but credit should be given to the Canadian teenager. According to Martina, Bianca showed more willingness to win. For her, losing four Major finals in a row will make recovery difficult for Williams.

The last win of Serena Williams came way back at the Australian Open in 2017 when she was already pregnant.

The US Open final

It was the second meeting in a final between Serena Williams and Bianca Andreescu. The first one was during the Rogers Cup where the American had to retire after just 4 games due to back spasms. This was the event where Andreescu showed empathy to Serena by embracing her at the net.

Williams has played fewer matches each year since 2013. The number of titles she has won has also dwindled. In 2016, she only played a total of 44 matches winning only 2 titles—Wimbledon and Rome.
