Marta Kostyuk began playing tennis at the age of five under the guidance of her mother, Talina Beiko. Alongside tennis, she practiced gymnastics for seven years before fully committing to the racket sport at 11. She explained that gymnastics shaped her physically but also imposed strict standards that affected her well-being.
Impact of gymnastics
Kostyuk recalled how the discipline demanded constant monitoring of her body. “It helped me a lot physically, but I also had to deal with many consequences afterward because it’s an extremely strict sport. From a very young age, I had to be very careful with my weight and food. I would weigh myself twenty or thirty times a day when I was eight or ten years old, and that leaves significant mental scars,” she said.
Overcoming eating disorder and injury
The Ukrainian admitted that the pressures of gymnastics led to an eating disorder in her younger years. She also suffered a serious injury that took time to overcome. “I also suffered a very serious injury when I was young, and it took me a long time to overcome all of that, but today I feel like I’m in a much better place, and I’m grateful to have gone through that experience,” she commented.
Career achievements
Despite the challenges, Kostyuk has built a successful career on the WTA Tour. She has won three titles, including the 2023 ATX Open and two more in 2026, marking her rise among the sport’s promising talents.
