Why Ostapenko is confident about the American hard-court season

Jelena Ostapenko is probably the most exciting upcoming player in the WTA circuit. The Latvian has won her maiden career title at the Roland Garros (that’s pretty unique), and she had a decent run soon after in Wimbledon when she got to the quarters before falling to an in-form Venus Williams.

Why Jelena is confident

Jelena is currently in Toronto where she is about to compete in the Rogers Cup to share her thoughts about her current situation.

“It was good to have those couple of weeks at Wimbledon. It was a tough match against Venus, of course, but I’m happy I made the quarterfinals. After a big win, it’s difficult to keep that level up because of the pressure and expectations.

Now I’ve had good preparation for the hard court season, and I’m looking forward to my first match here.

I have more confidence now, but I also have more pressure. People expect more from me as I come to tournaments as a French Open champion. Other players are preparing better against me, and everyone wants to beat me. So, on one side, it’s better to have this confidence, but also on the other side, it’s tough.”

Ostapenko will start her campaign in Toronto as the seed no.12 against a qualifier.
