Emma Raducanu closed out the 2025 season ranked No.29, her highest position since August 2022. The conclusion of the 11-month tennis calendar brought relief to many players, particularly those at the top of the WTA and ATP, who have often voiced frustration about the relentless schedule.
Players’ dilemma with the calendar
While players technically have the freedom to skip tournaments, many fear losing ranking points or missing out on prize money. This has led to repeated complaints about the workload. Raducanu, however, offered a different perspective. “I think that’s a challenge. I don’t necessarily think it’s something to complain about because it’s what we are given. And we are making a great living as well. I mean, it’s not all glamorous. There are definitely times when it’s very difficult, and we are flagging mentally, physically, and everything hurts. But at the same time, what are we going to do about it?” she told The Telegraph.
Alcaraz’s contrasting stance
Men’s World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz has frequently criticized the calendar, especially when questioned about his participation in exhibition matches. Critics argue that he should rest rather than commit to unofficial events. Alcaraz has defended his choices, insisting that exhibitions do not add stress and allow him to play without the same level of concentration required in official tournaments.
Raducanu’s call for perspective
Raducanu emphasized that players should set a better example for fans and aspiring athletes. “I am sure there are certain people who go to work, and their bosses make them do something, but they have to do it; it’s their job. If we put up a front that isn’t complaining, I think that is a better example to the people watching, trying to get into tennis, the younger people. If they see all the top players moaning about the calendar, I don’t think that’s necessarily inspiring to look up to,” she added.
Exhibition plans altered
Raducanu was scheduled to play an exhibition alongside Alcaraz in the United States this month. However, she withdrew due to a minor foot issue, highlighting the physical demands that remain a constant challenge for professional players.
