Siegemund wins the title in Stuttgart

The world no.49 Laura Siegemund finally wins the hometown tournament in Stuttgart.

The German reached the final last year in Stuttgart, and she looked rather inspired also this year. The German reached the final after defeating on the way top players such as Svetlana Kuznetsova, Karolina Pliskova,  and Simona Halep.

The final against an in-form Kristina Mladenovic was a sheer thriller. After exchanging the first two sets, Laura had the opportunity to serve for the match when she was leading 5-4. The German was extremely slow in between serves, and she received a controversial penalty point when she was 15-30 down (that became 15-40). Eventually, Siegemund lost the serve (5-5), and the match went to the breaker. Mladenovic grabbed a 4-1 lead, but the German refused to bend to win four consecutive points (5-4 for Laura) to conquer a championship point soon after (6-5). Laura won the decisive point after an extremely spectacular exchange at the net. The final result was 6-1 2-6 7-6 (5).

I don’t know how I did it. SIEGEMUND

Soon after winning the last point, Laura couldn’t contain her emotions. In the following interview, she commented

“It’s unbelievable. I’m a bit perplexed now. I think tonight will be the party of the year. It was an unbelievable match. I don’t know how I did it.”
