Pablo Cuevas is hitting the headlines for two reasons: first, he won his 3rd consecutive title in San Paulo; second, on match point he hit an underarm serve on the second serve against Albert Ramos-Vinolas (too scared?). The Uruguayan won the final 6-7 (3) 6-4 6-4 after the match was delayed by one day because of the rain.
Why I hit the underarm serve. CUEVAS
After the match, Pablo explained why he made that choice
“I was making a lot of double faults (12!). When I prepared to hit that second serve, there was a big chance that I would hit a double fault. So I thought about the possibility of the underarm serve and that it was something I probably shouldn’t do. But I also should not do another double fault. So I just stopped thinking, and I did it.”
This is Pablo’s 6th career title. Probably the strangest after that serve.
