Novak Djokovic shared his thoughts on Rafael Nadal’s farewell ceremony at the French Open, revealing that the moment made him reflect on his own future in tennis. As Nadal bid an emotional goodbye to the tournament where he won a record 14 titles, Djokovic stood alongside Roger Federer and Andy Murray, witnessing the tribute to their longtime rival.
Djokovic admitted that watching Nadal’s speech made him think about the eventual end of his own career. He acknowledged the significance of the moment, recognizing the impact Nadal has had on the sport and the legacy he leaves behind. The Serbian star, who has won 24 Grand Slam titles, expressed admiration for the way Nadal was honored, stating that every player dreams of receiving such recognition when their time comes.
Despite the nostalgia, Djokovic also felt pride in still competing at the highest level while many of his greatest rivals have retired. He reflected on the intense battles he shared with Nadal, Federer, and Murray, emphasizing how their rivalries shaped his career and pushed him to improve.
This is what he said:
“I was thinking about my end of the road as well last night or yesterday when we were watching Rafa having his speech, particularly those moments when we were in the back room, the three of us, and I was just talking to Federer and Murray about their goodbyes and reminiscing and reflecting on the rivalries, and of course part of me is proud that I’m still there, that I’m still going.”
“But at the same time, I was, and I still am a bit sad that they’re all gone, because those guys were my greatest motivations of why I competed so intensely and for so long.”
As Djokovic continues his campaign at Roland Garros, he remains focused on his performance but acknowledges that moments like Nadal’s farewell serve as reminders of the passage of time in professional tennis. Fans and players alike celebrated Nadal’s legacy, marking the end of an era while appreciating the lasting influence he has had on the sport.
