Carlos Alcaraz, the world number three in tennis, has expressed his disapproval of the recent lawsuit filed by the Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA) against the sport’s governing bodies. The lawsuit, initiated by the PTPA, accuses organizations such as the ATP, WTA, International Tennis Federation, and International Tennis Integrity Agency of anti-competitive practices and neglecting player welfare. Alcaraz, however, has distanced himself from the legal action, stating that he was unaware of its details and did not consent to the use of his previous statements in the lawsuit.

“It was surprising for me, because no one had told me about it. There are things I agree with and there are other things I don’t agree with. The main thing is I don’t support what was done.”

“Yesterday I saw on social media that they put something I said in a press conference in the documents and I wasn’t aware of it. I honestly don’t support that letter, because I wasn’t aware of it,” he clarified.

The PTPA, co-founded by Novak Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil, aims to advocate for players’ rights and address systemic issues within professional tennis. The lawsuit includes a quote from Alcaraz criticizing the demanding tennis calendar, which he made during a press conference last year. Alcaraz clarified that he was surprised to see his words included in the legal documents without his knowledge. He emphasized that while he agrees with some aspects of the PTPA’s concerns, he does not support the lawsuit itself.

The governing bodies of tennis have responded to the lawsuit with strong opposition. The ATP described the PTPA’s actions as divisive and distracting, while the WTA labeled the lawsuit as regrettable and misguided. Despite the controversy, the PTPA claims to have garnered support from over 300 players, including prominent figures like Nick Kyrgios, who has openly endorsed the organization’s efforts.

Alcaraz remains focused on his tennis career and is currently competing in the Miami Open. He has reiterated his commitment to the sport and his desire to address issues within tennis through constructive dialogue rather than legal disputes. His stance highlights the complexities of balancing advocacy for players’ rights with maintaining unity within the tennis community.
