Jordan Thompson’s Brisbane International campaign came to an abrupt end after he was forced to retire during his quarterfinal match against reigning champion Grigor Dimitrov.
The 30-year-old Australian struggled in the opening set, losing 6-1 as Dimitrov dominated the court. After seeking medical attention, Thompson returned but had to withdraw while trailing 2-1 in the second set, citing calf issues.
On-court microphones captured Thompson informing Dimitrov post-match that his calf had been sore before the match began.
“This is a shame,” commentator Peter Psaltis remarked, expressing hope for a swift recovery. Thompson’s exit leaves no Australians in the singles draws and raises concerns ahead of the Australian Open.
Dimitrov advances to the semifinals, where he will face Jiri Lehecka in his quest to defend the title.
