Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt has confidently endorsed Alex de Minaur’s chances of winning the Australian Open, asserting the World No. 9 has the skill and determination to make history at Melbourne Park.
De Minaur displayed impeccable form during the United Cup, winning all three of his matches, including singles victories against Argentina and Great Britain. Despite his efforts, Team Australia fell short as Great Britain advanced, led by De Minaur’s fiancée Katie Boulter, who secured a singles win against Olivia Gadecki.
Hewitt, the last Australian man to reach the Australian Open final in 2005, expressed his faith in De Minaur’s potential. “Absolutely, he can win the Australian Open,” Hewitt said. “Alex is playing pain-free, moving fluidly, and enjoying the game again. It’s about embracing the moment and taking it one match at a time.”
De Minaur has shown resilience throughout 2024, battling injuries that limited his mobility and led to a challenging recovery period. However, the United Cup marked a turning point, with De Minaur proclaiming, “This was the old me. I’ve got my legs back, everyone. I’m back.”
With the Australian Open fast approaching, De Minaur’s revitalized form and unwavering determination position him as a strong contender to end the nation’s Grand Slam drought.
