Stan Wawrinka is the latest casualty for Swiss tennis. The world no.4 will join Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic in not competing at the upcoming Games in Rio.
Back pain
Stan’s management team released the following statement.
“After a medical examination by his doctor in Geneva, the current world number four has to withdraw from the Olympic Games which will start in Rio de Janeiro later this week.
“Stan Wawrinka felt increasing pain during the tournament in Toronto and therefore traveled back to Switzerland in order to consult with his doctor for a complete check-up.
Following analyses and an MRI scan, local overstress was discovered and he was advised to reduce his physical activity for an undetermined period during which he will undergo further examinations.”
The real problem is that not many players are happy to participate if there are no ATP/WTA points and no prize money. If you add that there are some concerns about the Zika virus and security, it seems there is no point to go to Rio (only for the glory).
