Jannik Sinner’s doping case, reopened by WADA after his positive test for Clostebol, has drawn sharp criticism from tennis legend Andy Roddick. Initially, the ITIA accepted Sinner’s explanation that trace amounts of the banned substance entered his system through a physiotherapist’s use of an over-the-counter spray. However, WADA’s decision to revisit the case has delayed clarity, with a final ruling expected from CAS in February 2025.
Roddick, speaking on his podcast Served with Andy Roddick, blasted the prolonged process as “completely unprofessional,” emphasizing the impact of uncertainty on Sinner’s career. Highlighting WADA’s mismanagement, he sarcastically questioned the timing of their actions, adding, “They just look so unorganized and stupid, frankly.”
Roddick speculated on potential outcomes, predicting that a ban of up to three months might still allow Sinner to compete at Grand Slams, while a six-month suspension would severely disrupt his season. Despite the controversy, Roddick defended Sinner, stating he doesn’t believe the Italian intentionally doped.
The situation underscores growing frustrations with WADA’s approach, as both Sinner and Iga Swiatek face backlash over their respective doping controversies.
