The sponsor of Coco Gauff has come under fire for allegedly dressing her in revealing attire for her matches.
At the age of 14, the world No. 3 secured a contract with New Balance, and she currently owns her own line of personalized shoes and apparel. The athletic clothing company has faced criticism for the outfits she wears to matches after winning the WTA Finals.
After defeating Qinwen Zheng to win the season-ending championships in Riyadh last weekend, Gauff raised her ninth career trophy. After winning the US Open, her first Grand Slam victory, this is her second-biggest title.
During the tournament, the American wore a purple dress, which is the colour of the WTA Tour. For the trophy ceremony and her walk-ons, she accessorized it with a jacket and a matching headband.
Although her fashion statement was well received, it sparked discussion about the other clothes she sports throughout the tennis season. Her clothing came up when Serena Williams’ former coach Rennae Stubbs talked about Gauff’s week in Riyadh on her podcast.
Co-host of the podcast Caitlin Thompson said: “I love that the finalists wore purple. Coco’s New Balance kit was the best I’ve seen her in.”
Stubbs said: “Her stuff is so cool. Her stuff is often good but a lot of times they put her in extremely tight and very revealing clothes. This one I felt like was quiet. She’s got an insane physique so it’s not like anything’s going to be unflattering on her, but this one for me just was 10 out of 10.”
However, Gauff appears to love working with New Balance and has no issues with the way she looks.
