Daniil Medvedev displayed a relaxed, almost indifferent mindset in his victory over Alex de Minaur at the ATP Finals in Turin, winning decisively in straight sets. Medvedev, who faced criticism after his previous match, explained his unusual approach in the press conference, revealing that he focused on playing “without caring” about the outcome.
“Last match wasn’t good in many ways,” Medvedev admitted. “So, I decided today I would go into this one and kind of not care, in a good way…whatever happens, happens. If I lose today, I probably go home on Thursday, and the season’s over. But if I win, I have a chance to fight.”
He noted that this mindset allowed him to play freely, aiming for his shots without the usual pressure. As he gained momentum, Medvedev kept reminding himself to stick to his carefree approach, regardless of the score. “Happy with the level,” he concluded. “I’ll try to do the same in the next match. So I don’t care,” he added with a laugh.
The unusual strategy clearly worked, and Medvedev now has a shot at advancing, should he maintain this uninhibited style in his remaining matches in Turin.
