In a statement issued after an off-air comment was inadvertently broadcast, sports journalist Jon Wertheim apologized for remarks made about the appearance of Czech tennis star Barbora Krejcikova. Wertheim explained that the comment occurred during a private rehearsal for a Tennis Channel show, where he was appearing via Zoom. He noted that an unflattering camera angle of Krejcikova was shown on a graphic, and in response to a similar camera setup on his own screen, he made a self-deprecating comment comparing his forehead to Krejcikova’s appearance in the image.
The exchange was meant to be private but was unintentionally aired live, causing offense. Wertheim acknowledged the unprofessional nature of his words, emphasizing his regret and responsibility for the comment. “I realize: I am not the victim here,” Wertheim said. “It was neither professional nor charitable nor reflective of the person I strive to be. I am accountable. I own this. I am sorry.”
