Daniil Medvedev, the Russian tennis star and former ATP Finals champion, made a candid and somber admission following his recent loss to American Taylor Fritz at the ATP Finals in Turin. In an uncharacteristic display, Medvedev admitted he felt “zero pleasure” on the court, expressing deep frustration with both his performance and the conditions of play.
Medvedev, seeded fourth, was defeated 6-4, 6-3 by Fritz, unable to break his opponent’s serve and committing eight double faults. The match exposed his difficulties adjusting to the new ATP Finals’ balls, which he criticized as favoring longer rallies. Known for his dominance in extended exchanges, Medvedev seemed out of rhythm, even blaming the balls as a significant factor.
Adding to the match’s drama, Medvedev faced multiple emotional outbursts—smashing his racquet and even a microphone after struggling to maintain his serve. Following the match, Medvedev revealed ongoing frustrations over the past few years, highlighting a daily struggle with motivation and enjoyment on the court. The Russian, who has two remaining round-robin matches against Jannik Sinner and Alex de Minaur, remains uncertain about his future in the tournament.
Medvedev, however, expressed a willingness to step back and recharge. “I’ll see how it goes,” he said. “If it doesn’t work out, I go on holiday. I’m happy.” Despite the recent challenges, Medvedev holds his position in the top five globally, although he hinted that his mental struggle might prompt further reflection beyond this season.
