After winning £4.6 million in Saudi Arabia, Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Paris Masters one week later. The Italian was scheduled to start tomorrow at the tournament, but he has withdrawn due to a virus.
In the French capital, Sinner had been handed a difficult draw and was originally scheduled to face Felix Auger-Aliassime or Ben Shelton.
But the latter later pulled out, and Sinner is no longer there. Arthur Cazaux will start in the draw in place of the 23-year-old.
Sinner told supporters in a video message shared on the tournament’s social media platforms: “Hey guys, I’m here. I’m very disappointed to tell you that I am not able to play here at this tournament. I came very early here to prepare, and then I felt sick. I’m having a virus at the moment, which is going to pass in the next two or three days. Body-wise, I am not able to compete.I am very, very sorry for that. I will see you guys [in Paris] next year; hopefully it will be a great year. And this year—without me! Hopefully I’ll see you next year. Ciao.”
Later, he wrote on X: “This is not an easy announcement to make. My team and I arrived early to prepare as best as possible, but unfortunately, I started feeling unwell during training and saw the doctor on Sunday. It turns out I’ve come down with a virus. I’m feeling better now, but I’m still not ready to compete here in Paris. I was really looking forward to this tournament, so it’s disappointing, to say the least. For now, I’m focusing on recovery and getting back to 100%. I’ll be aiming to come back stronger for Turin!”
He has drawn criticism for maintaining that he had no financial incentive to participate in the exhibition event.
