Carlos Alcaraz explains how he defeated Gael Monfils in Shanghai

Maintaining his winning run, Carlos Alcaraz overcame Gael Monfils to become the first Spaniard to make it to the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals since 2017.

Alcaraz And Monfils

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Gael Monfils to continue his winning streak and become the first Spaniard to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals since 2017.

Alcaraz defeated the Frenchman 6-4 7-5 on Wednesday, his 12th straight win after falling short against him in Cincinnati earlier this year. At 38 years old, Monfils was attempting to become the second oldest ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinalist in history. He battled Alcaraz early on and nearly forced a break.

However, in the ninth game of the opening set, he was unable to maintain his lead, and the 21-year-old capitalized. Alcaraz put on a confident display in the second set, winning three games to love overall, but he did not have the upper hand.

In the penultimate game, Monfils was only able to stop two of three break points as Alcaraz pushed home his lead. On Thursday, he will meet with Tomas Machac.

Alcaraz expressed his thoughts after the win and said: “The main thing I tried in this match was to stay calm, to control my emotions, and wait for my chances. That helped me a lot to show my best tennis during the match. I am feeling the ball really well, much more than I was during the American swing. So, I am happy to be able to do it and to keep going.”
