In a pre-event interview at the Rolex Shanghai Masters 2024, Alexander Zverev discussed his recent health issues, including pneumonia that prevented him from playing in Beijing. Although he is currently on medication and playing with the condition is acceptable, the illness is not yet completely gone and will likely take a few months to disappear.

Zverev also expressed concerns about the court conditions and the less-than-ideal balls being used, finding them dead and slow. Despite these challenges, Zverev fondly recalled his 2019 experience in Shanghai, where he reached the final and defeated Roger Federer. Looking ahead, his goal for the remainder of the season is to finish as the number two-ranked player in the world, a feat he has not accomplished before, with tough competition expected from Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently playing exceptionally well.
