The Greater London Authority approves 39 new courts on Wimbledon’s expansion plan

The All England Club's proposal to extend into Wimbledon Park has received approval from the Greater London Authority. Jules Pipe, London's deputy mayor for planning, has made the controversial plan to build 39 new courts, including an 8,000-seat show court, on the site of the former Wimbledon Park Golf Club.

The Greater London Authority has given its approval to the All England Club’s plans to expand into Wimbledon Park.

Wimbledon’s contentious plan to construct 39 new courts, including an 8,000-seat show court, on the former Wimbledon Park Golf Club site—nearly tripling the size of its current site—seems likely to proceed, thanks to the decision made by Jules Pipe, London’s deputy mayor for planning.

After GLA planning officers suggested granting permission, the decision was anticipated, and Pipe highlighted the advantages for the competition as well as the community.

Pipe announced this and said: “In summary, the proposed development would facilitate very significant benefits. I agree with my officers that these benefits clearly outweigh the harm.”

According to a GLA report released earlier this month, conditional planning permission should be granted for the Wimbledon project due to its significant economic benefits and potential to enhance the Wimbledon brand. No other factors should be taken into account or used as justification for the permission’s refusal.
