Tennis fans may soon witness another legendary collaboration between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, but this time off the court. Federer’s longtime agent, Tony Godsick, has revealed an exciting plan to reunite the two tennis icons as coaches for Team Europe in the Laver Cup.
“My dream is for Roger to be captain and Rafa to be assistant, and then the other way around,” Godsick shared in a recent interview with Marca. The prospect of seeing Federer and Nadal working side by side brings anticipation, especially given their historic rivalry, which transformed into a cherished friendship. “The rivalry they had on the court was very special, but I think their friendship off the court is even more special. They are a clear example that all competitors can get along,” Godsick added.
This potential coaching duo could take place after the 2024 edition, as the Laver Cup will see new leadership in 2025. Yannick Noah is set to replace Bjorn Borg as captain of Team Europe, while Andre Agassi will succeed John McEnroe as captain of Team World.
Federer retired from professional tennis in September 2022 after winning 20 Grand Slam titles, while Nadal, who boasts 22 majors, plans to retire at the end of the 2024 season. Their reunion as captains would further solidify their lasting impact on the sport and deepen their already remarkable legacy.
