Casper Ruud acknowledged that he first thought there might have been wrongdoing in the way Jannik Sinner’s doping scandal was handled. But after looking over the case and going over the paperwork, he came to the conclusion that there was no discrimination.

Information regarding Sinner’s failed drug tests from March was made public a month ago. He tested positive twice for Clostebol, a performance-enhancing drug. His instant appeals were granted, and his initial suspensions were lifted.

The Italian was cleared of all charges of all charges by the ITIA and an impartial tribunal following the conclusion of their investigations. Ruud acknowledged in an interview that he had first doubts about the circumstances.

Ruud expressed his remarks about it and said: “I noticed at the start before I got into the case and the sequence of events, that I also thought there were a few owls in the bog. He is number one in the world, there had to be discrimination. But then I familiarized myself with the case and the rules. If you have read the documents and understand the process in this type of case, then you understand that there is no discrimination here.”

He added: “What Sinner has done well, to defend himself, is that he managed to find an explanation within 15 days after testing positive. He understood quite quickly where it came from. There are not many athletes who manage to come up with an explanation within 15 days, but Jannik has managed it. It speaks in his favour that he quickly found out where the substance came from and that he has a reasonable explanation.”
