David Witt, born on June 2, 1973, in High Point, North Carolina, is a renowned American tennis coach and former professional player. His journey in the world of tennis began at a young age, and he quickly made a name for himself as a promising junior player. Witt’s early career was marked by significant achievements, including winning the USTA Boys’ 16s Clay, Hard, and National Championships, and being the top-ranked under-16 player in the USTA in 1989.
As a professional player, Witt reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 128 in November 1993. Although he didn’t capture any ATP titles, he did win two Challenger-level events and had notable performances in Grand Slam tournaments, including reaching the second round of the US Open in 1994.
Witt transitioned to coaching after retiring from professional tennis in 2005. His coaching career took off when he began working with Venus Williams in 2007. Witt served as Venus’s hitting partner and later as her coach, a partnership that lasted for 11 years. Under his guidance, Venus achieved remarkable success, including reaching the finals of Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
After parting ways with Venus Williams in 2018, Witt took on the role of coaching Jessica Pegula in July 2019. His tenure with Pegula was highly successful, culminating in her rise to the top ranks of women’s tennis. Witt’s coaching prowess was recognized when he was named the 2022 WTA Coach of the Year.
In 2024, Witt briefly coached Maria Sakkari before starting a new chapter with Frances Tiafoe in July. Tiafoe, a rising star in American tennis, had previously worked with Wayne Ferreira and Diego Moyano. Witt’s extensive experience and proven track record make him a valuable asset to Tiafoe’s team as they aim for new heights in the tennis world.
