Popyrin was quite dominant at the beginning of the set to break Novak Djokovic in the 2nd game (2-0) before consolidating his break and lead 3-0. Notwithstanding, that wasn’t sufficient for Novak to win the set since the Australian succeeded in breaking back in the 5th (2-3) game. The Serbian kept his cool to break Alexei in the 6th (4-2) and in the 8th (6-2) game.

Djokovic was flawless in converting all his break points in the 2nd (1-0 30-40), the 6th (3-2 40-A) and the 8th game (5-2 30-40). Also, on the other side, Popyrin was unerring in converting all his break points in the 5th game (1-3 30-40 and 40-A).

They contested 52 points. Djokovic conquered the set after winning 10 more points than the Australian (31-21). Novak surrendered 10 points on serve (17-10). on the other side of the court, Alexei conceded 14 points on serve (11-14).

Alexei won the set after he broke the Serbian in the 5th (3-2) and in the 7th (5-2) game. The Serbian tried to stage a comeback breaking in the 8th (5-3) game. Anyhow, Alexei refused to give way to conquer the set 6-4.

Alexei failed to serve out the set when leading 5-2 to be broken at 40.

One of the most important stints of the set was when Popyrin won 4 consecutive games in the 4th set to change the game count from 1-2 to 5-2.
