After escaping a ban for failing two anti-doping tests, Jannik Sinner says he is clean and that he did not receive special treatment.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) cleared Sinner of any wrongdoing or carelessness, despite it being made public on Tuesday that he tested positive for a prohibited substance twice in March.
Sinner explained to the ITIA that clostebol, an anabolic agent that can promote muscle growth, had unknowingly entered his system through a product that one of his team members had used to treat a minor wound. The ITIA accepted his explanation.
In the tennis community, the ruling has drawn criticism, with some players taking issue with how quickly the case was heard. Sinner claims, however, that the short turnaround was due to his ability to explain the source of the material discovered inside his body.
Sinner talked about it and said: “Every player who gets tested positive has to go through the same process. There is no shortcut; there is no different treatment; they are all the same process. I know sometimes the frustration of other players, obviously. But maybe because they got suspended, they didn’t know exactly where it comes from or what substance it is, but the main reason is where it comes from and how it entered his own system.”
He added: “We knew it straight away and we were aware of what happened. We went straight away and I was suspended for two or three days. I couldn’t practice anything. But they accepted it very, very fast and that’s why I carried on playing. I always believed that I kept playing tennis because, in my mind, I knew that I hadn’t done anything wrong. I knew that I was very clean and I knew that I was always looking forward to being a fair player.”

WWWWLWWLWW Ranked no.1, Sinner played his last match on the 19th of August when he defeated world no.20 Francis Tiafoe 7-6(4) 6-2 in the final in Cincinnati to win his 16th career title.
