Danielle Collins, the American tennis star, urged the fans to show some respect when she saw them trying to divert Erika Andreeva, her opponent, while the Russian was attempting to serve.
Collins, the top-seeded player in Monterrey with a first-round bye, began her campaign on Tuesday in Mexico against world No. 89 Andreeva. However, even though world No. 7 Collins went into the match as the clear favourite and performed brilliantly from the outset, 20-year-old Andreeva turned the tide and made it a very competitive match.
Andreeva had a 40/0 serve advantage and led 4-3 in the third set when Collins became irritated with the spectators.
Collins said angrily: “What in the world? I don’t get it. It’s not that hard to let us play tennis and be supportive.”
Collins and Andreeva were facing certain challenges in managing the Monterrey crowd even before this moment.
Collins won the next point, and then, after yelling at the crowd to behave better, Andreeva realized she had her second game point, leading 5-3. Andreeva then went on to complete her incredible 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback victory over Collins in the ninth game, during which the top-seeded American was serving to stay in the match.
