Jannik Sinner has admitted that he needs to get in better shape if he hopes to win a second Grand Slam championship next month. At the US Open, the 23-year-old will be looking to win his second major title of the year after taking home the trophy at the Australian Open in January.
In the Cincinnati Masters semifinals on Sunday, Sinner took on German star Alexander Zverev in an exhausting three-hour and seven-minute match.
However, the Italian player overcame a hip problem to defeat his opponent 7-6, 5-7, 7-6, and secure his spot in the final match.
Sinner has never acknowledged it completely, but he has stressed how critical it is to keep getting better in this area. It was obvious that he would talk about his physical condition in the post-match interview after such a hard-fought victory that he won despite it. His remarks emphasize the need for development in this area, but it’s unclear to the audience whether he means to speak of the near future or his long-term professional future.
He talked about it after the win and said: “It means a lot to me. It’s a very different moment, what I’m going through, so I’m very happy about this result. The physical aspect of course I have to improve because if I want to win Grand Slams or a bigger title I have to be for sure more in shape. I just try to stay there mentally, which I’m very proud of. Let’s see what’s coming tomorrow.”
