Anisimova Talks

To get to the WTA Toronto Masters semi-finals, Amanda Anisimova defeated Aryna Sabalenka, the two-time defending Australian Open winner, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday.

Anisimova, who is in her maiden Masters semifinal, will play eighth-seeded Emma Navarro on Sunday after Navarro defeated fellow American lucky loser Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).

The 22-year-old Anisimova will aim to make it to her fourth WTA final overall and her first since triumphing in Melbourne in January 2022. After breaking in the tenth game to lose the opening set, Sabalenka missed a backhand to give up the set and slammed her racquet against the court out of fury.

After Sabalenka double-faulted after 86 minutes, Anisimova, who hasn’t dropped a set this week, claimed the final eight games, holding for a 5-2 lead and breaking for the shock.

Anisimova expressed her remarks about Sabalenka after the match and said: “She’s an amazing player, so it’s always really tough playing against her.”

Anisimova talked about facing Navarro and said: “She’s a player who is definitely on fire right now. She’s playing some great tennis. I’m sure it will be a tough match.”
