Nishikori reaches the 4th round in Indian Wells

Kei Nishikori reaches the 4th round in Indian Wells after winning a tough encounter against home favorite Steve Johnson.

Kei had to recover from a slow start in the opening set (0-3 and 2-5) after winning a decisive break in the 9th game (4-5). The Japanese was great in the breaker to save 4 consecutive set points (2-6) and then win 6 consecutive points and the set.



 

In the second set things got complicated when Kei failed to serve out the match (5-3). The Japanese had to win the set at the breaker again. The final score was 7-6 (6) 7-6 (5). The match ended after 1 hour and 56 minutes and Nishikori scored just 2 points more than Johnson (88 vs. 86).

After the match Kei commented “It’s not easy with these windy conditions and the ball and altitude, everything,” commented Nishikori. “It’s tough to expect great tennis here, but I thought I was patient today.”

Next vs. Isner

Kei will play John Isner for a place in the quarters. Head to head is 1-all.
