Jasmine Paolini explains why it was tough playing against Andreeva in the French Open semifinal

Jasmine Paolini crushed Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday at Roland Garros, extending her run to the title. Being the first Italian player to make it to Paris, the little 28-year-old made history.

Paolini Pumped Up

Jasmine Paolini continued Italy’s fairy tale at Roland Garros on Thursday by crushing Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-1.

The young 28-year-old created history by being the first Italian player to reach the Paris clay final since doubles partner Sara Errani in 2012. Her decisive win occurred just two days after her countryman Jannik Sinner advanced to the men’s draw’s final four, securing his position as the world No. 1 the following week.

After Iga Swiatek’s easy victory over Coco Gauff in the other semifinal, Paolini will have her greatest test. It was both players’ first time participating in a Grand Slam semifinal, and while Andreeva had defeated Paolini in her last match in April in Madrid, she was unable to capitalize on her few opportunities and committed too many unintentional mistakes to risk losing.

Paolini expressed her thoughts about the tough semifinal match and said: “It was a tough match. She’s playing unbelievable. She’s 17 years old. She’s so complete so I was a little nervous before the match. I lost against her one month ago so I was like, ‘Come on, you have to do better’. Today I was nervous in the first set but then, ball after ball, I was getting relaxed.”

She further said: “I learned a little later than other players; maybe [that] dreaming is the most important thing in sport and life. I’m happy that I could dream of this moment and I don’t know what to say. I’m so emotional.”
