In the second round of the French Open on Wednesday, Iga Swiatek narrowly defeated Naomi Osaka 7-6 (7-1) 1-6 7-5 after surviving match point.
After leading the defending champion and the world No. 1 in the third set, Osaka appeared to be about to pull off her biggest victory in a long time. After trailing match point down to Osaka, Swiatek claimed she would have had to be quite ignorant to believe she could overcome her before rallying to win a thrilling French Open match.
Swiatek expressed her thoughts about it after the match and said: “I honestly didn’t believe I could win, because I would be pretty naive. But it didn’t change the fact that I just tried to do work to play better. I managed to be more focused at the end of the match, which went pretty badly. In the first and second sets, I felt like I was not completely in the zone. When I was under the biggest pressure, I was able to switch that and maybe that made the difference.”
Swiatek was emotional and cried after the game after saving the match point in a fierce battle with Osaka. She seemed surprised after pulling off an exciting victory at the French Open.
