Emma Raducanu says her parents are strict and made her play tennis against her will. They also wanted her to be focused on her career, which meant she shouldn’t have had any boyfriends and shouldn’t spend too much time with friends.
Raducanu, who turns 22 in November, became well-known at a very young age, and she is currently considered one of the most well-liked British sports and tennis players. However, Raducanu had strict parents who believed that hard work and achieving something worthwhile would prepare their daughter for a successful life.
Raducanu, who is only 21 years old, has amassed one of the largest sponsorship portfolios in recent years, despite her youth. She rose to prominence in the marketing industry quickly, earning around $15 million in sponsorship deals alone last year.
After giving it some thought, Raducanu is thankful that her parents were tough with her since she now sees how it benefited her in her life and tennis career.
She expressed her thoughts about it in a recent interview and said: “At the start, my dad forced me into tennis. I didn’t like it, but as I got older and tennis became more of a priority, I was pushing myself. They are so pushy. When I was younger, more so. Now they are at a place where they tell me what they think is best, but they realise ultimately that the more they push, the more I am going to resist.”
She added: “I’ve seen some great people who I was playing with in the juniors who had way more lenient parents, who were like, ‘It’s OK if you lose”, and those players don’t play tennis anymore, so I don’t blame my parents for it. My parents were very much against boyfriends, as they interfered with training. When I was younger, I wasn’t even allowed to hang out with my girlfriends. A lot of the time, I was very resentful. But it made me very confident and comfortable in my own company, which is also a big strength.”
