Carlos Alcaraz broke the trend of great athletes rarely revealing their inner concerns before or after a significant match after defeating Fabian Marozsan in Indian Wells.
After beating Marozsan in straight sets, Alcaraz advanced quickly to the BNP Paribas Open quarterfinals.
Alcaraz expressed his thoughts after the win and said: “Honestly, I was nervous before the match; I’m not going to lie. Playing against someone who beats you easily—I remember I had no chances in the match in Rome. It was difficult for me today to approach the match, but I’m really happy with the way that I did. I started pretty well, playing my style from the beginning. Today I knew what I had to do better than I did in Rome.”
He added: “I think the conditions here suit my game very well. I feel very comfortable on this court and in this tournament, not only on but also off the court. The players must be relaxed, and they must also feel calm off the court. Being able to disconnect mentally and not think about tennis 100% of the time is important. Here are things we can do off the court; in my case, I play golf, and I can do it here perfectly. In the last three years, I have played great tennis here. This tournament gives me extra motivation and confidence.”
