EXPLAINED. Why defending champion Rybakina had to withdraw from Indian Wells

The reigning champion Elena Rybakina abruptly withdrew from the ATP-WTA Indian Wells Masters just a few hours before her planned opening match.

Defending champion Elena Rybakina suddenly withdrew from the ATP-WTA Indian Wells Masters only a few hours before her scheduled opening match.

The cause of this unannounced departure is a stomach ailment that has affected the Kazakhstani player. In a sincere message, Rybakina expressed her disappointment. She was scheduled to play her match against Nadia Podoroska of Argentina in the second round.

She announced this and said: “It is with great sadness that I must announce that I will not be able to participate in this year’s Indian Wells tournament due to gastrointestinal issues.”

Understanding the importance of the occasion, she expressed her wish to go back and defend her title. She thanked her supporters and said she was sorry they were not able to see her play. In addition to underscoring her need for rest and recovery, Rybakina promised to return to the court determined to give her all to compete for her fans.
