Paula Badosa Withdraws From Indian Wells

Former world No. 2, Paula Badosa, faced with continued injury struggles, withdrew from the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Spaniard achieved her career breakthrough at Indian Wells in 2021, clinching her first WTA 1000 title by defeating former champion Victoria Azarenka in the final. However, a series of injuries, including calf, adductor, and low back issues, followed her ascent in the WTA Rankings, ultimately leading to a stress fracture in her L4 vertebra, sidelining her for the latter part of the 2023 season.

Returning to Indian Wells with a wildcard entry, Badosa’s hopes were dashed as she was forced to withdraw, paving the way for Argentine lucky loser Nadia Podoroska to enter the draw. Podoroska is set to face American Ashlyn Krueger in the first round on Wednesday.

Expressing her disappointment, Badosa shared in an Instagram Story, accompanied by a photo of her 2021 victory, “So sorry I have to withdraw from my favorite tournament. I tried everything to be able to play but (it) wasn’t enough. I’m having a very difficult time with my injury but I’m fighting every day to come (back) as soon as possible.”
