According to Stefanos Tsitsipas, he started playing single-handed backhand shots at the age of eight in an attempt to copy Roger Federer.
Federer was well-known for his single-handed backhand shot throughout his illustrious career, one that not many players on the tour executed. It has always been the preference of most in the field to proceed with two hands, and this still holds today.
In a recent discussion, Tsitsipas was asked why he loves to play one-handed backhand more often. He expressed his thoughts about playing this particular shot and said: “I just thought that it was the coolest shot to play. I think it’s a great advantage to play single-handed backhand. And I owe a lot to that shot. It’s visually pleasing and more entertaining. You may argue that you have more control while playing with two hands, but nothing compares to opening the field with one hand, depending on who chooses to play with that one hand. This is the reason why I play single-handed backhand.”
