The young Spanish tennis star, who fell short in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and suffered a semi-final defeat to Nicolas Jarry in Buenos Aires, expressed his frustration during a post-match press conference. “It’s a tough loss for me. It hurts me a lot,” Alcaraz admitted.
Acknowledging the need for improvement, Alcaraz emphasized the importance of raising his performance level. “There is a lot of room for improvement. I played some good tennis, but I have to raise the bar, I’m far from my true level,” he told reporters.
Reflecting on his defeat to Jarry, Alcaraz highlighted missed opportunities as a crucial factor. “With Jarry, it was difficult to get into the game. I had many opportunities that I didn’t take. When you waste them against players like him, it costs you dearly,” he explained.
Despite the setbacks, Alcaraz remains focused on his upcoming tournament in Rio, where he aims to build on his past performances. “It’s been a difficult week but I’ve retained a lot of things to improve. Compared to 2023, there has been no improvement. For me, this is a very important element,” he stated.
Alcaraz’s level of play, he admits, is dependent on his concentration, attitude, and energy, factors he aims to refine in order to achieve greater consistency on the court. As he prepares to face Thiago Monteiro in the opening round of the Rio Open, Alcaraz is determined to channel his frustrations into motivation and seize the opportunity for redemption.
