Tennis fans are unhappy with American alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn for drawing comparisons between Jannik Sinner and Roger Federer.
In the Australian Open of 2024, Sinner achieved his first Grand Slam triumph by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final with an incredible comeback victory of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. He became the sixth different player to win the men’s championship Down Under with the victory, having started in 2005. The tennis community began to compare the Italian to the game’s legends as a result of his enormous accomplishments.
After sharing a tennis court and going skiing together in the past, Vonn and Sinner have known each other for a few years. Sinner and Federer were compared by Vonn recently because of their elegance and calmness.
Vonn expressed her thoughts about Sinner and said: “He reminds me of Roger [Federer]. To be honest, if he’s under pressure and he’s got to serve, he’s got a match point or something; the perspective is that if he misses the point, nothing is going to happen.”
Fans on social media, however, are dissatisfied with this statement. A fan claimed that athletes ought to be true to themselves and not be measured against others.
One fan commented: “Why does he have to be Federer?? Why can’t he be a Sinner?? Why can’t people be allowed to excel or fail and keep their unique identities?? What’s with all the comparisons?? Let him pave his path!!”
Another fan questioned Vonn’s tennis knowledge, arguing that Federer and Sinner had distinct playing styles. He wrote: “Oh, my goddess! His tennis style is anything but Roger’s! And I am not saying this to undermine these two great champions! I am curious about what tennis expertise Lindsay has to be quoted! She is just an ordinary Fed fan!”
