Tsitsipas: I've Shed A Lot Of Tears So That Greeks Could Love Tennis

Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas is gearing up for a fresh start, both on the court and off. Currently leading the national team in the Davis Cup qualifiers against Romania, Tsitsipas spoke exclusively to OPEN about various aspects of his career, including a significant fall in the ATP ranking.

Addressing his decline in the rankings, Tsitsipas expressed readiness for a swift rebound, stating, “I think I need less than a month to restart. I have a lot of tournaments ahead of me, so I have a lot of opportunities to play well and add points that way, a much better ranking will come than what I have now.”

Despite the setback, Tsitsipas revealed his next ambitious goal – securing an Olympic medal in Paris. In a surprising twist, he emphasized his preference for an Olympic medal over a Grand Slam, stating, “What I have to focus on now is finding strength and becoming a better tennis player.”

The Greek player also shared his excitement about leading the national team in the Davis Cup qualifiers, especially playing on the court of AEK, a team he has supported since childhood. “It’s a lifelong dream for me; I’ve always had a great love for both basketball and football, so for this to come true means a lot to me,” Tsitsipas remarked.

In addition to his on-court endeavors, Tsitsipas revealed a project aimed at elevating tennis in Greece. Focusing on junior players striving to excel professionally, he expressed his desire to support and guide them in achieving their dreams.

Tsitsipas concluded with his vision for the future, setting ambitious targets for 2024, “I want to finish 2024 in the top 4 tennis players and win an Olympic medal in Paris.” His determination to overcome challenges and contribute to the development of tennis in Greece showcases Tsitsipas’s commitment to both personal and collective success. As he embarks on this journey, the tennis world eagerly awaits Tsitsipas’s resurgence and pursuit of Olympic glory.
