In a remarkable display of resilience and skill, Rohan Bopanna, at the age of 43, has etched his name in tennis history by becoming the oldest man to attain the World No. 1 spot in men’s doubles. His dream fortnight in Melbourne reached its pinnacle when he and his Australian partner, Mathew Ebden, secured the men’s doubles title at the prestigious Australian Open, marking a significant achievement for Indian tennis.
Bopanna’s journey to the top has been one of perseverance, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. His triumph at the season’s first Grand Slam tournament not only solidifies his status as a tennis icon but also makes him only the second Indian, after Leander Paes in 2012, to claim victory at Melbourne Park.
In an exclusive conversation with India Today, a jubilant Bopanna expressed his elation, stating, “It’s not feeling on top of the world. I am on top of the world, being ranked number one. So definitely, you know, there’s nothing better than being at level 43 and number one.”
Reflecting on his tennis journey, Bopanna shared his perspective on the evolution of goals as a player. “Growing up as a tennis player, you just want to try and be the best tennis player in your neighbourhood. Then it probably starts… you want to be the best player in your state, then in your country. Then, of course, you want to go on and become No. 1 in the world. I am proud to be here,” he added.
The veteran player acknowledged the heartwarming reception he received not only from Indian fans but also from enthusiasts across the globe. Bopanna’s achievement goes beyond individual success; it serves as an inspiration for aspiring players, with the tennis world, including stalwarts like Rafael Nadal and rising star Sumit Nagal, showering praise on his sensational triumph in Melbourne.
“Yesterday when I landed at the airport, there was a fantastic reception from the airport staff. And then from my family friends, and everyone who had come to the airport to receive me. This was a full-fledged welcome. It was special and very emotional to have so much love. I am really thankful for all the support, you know from across the world, not only in India,” Bopanna shared, expressing his gratitude for the overwhelming support.
Bopanna’s journey to Grand Slam glory has been marked by challenges and hard-fought victories. His first major win came in partnership with Gabriella Dabrowski at the French Open, where they clinched the mixed doubles crown. Despite expectations soaring after his performances on the red dirt, the men’s doubles crown remained elusive until now.
“In some way or the other, I am happy that I continued. To have achieved everything and been part of this journey, I think it’s incredible. And I’m proud to have achieved this Grand Slam triumph,” Bopanna reflected on his storied career.
