Why Novak Djokovic refused to see a doctor before facing Jannik Sinner despite illness

In the Australian Open semi-final last week, Novak Djokovic was surprisingly defeated by Jannik Sinner. Furthermore, it has also come to light that Djokovic was sick with a fever the night before the match and declined to visit the doctor.

Djokovic Facing Sinner

Jannik Sinner unexpectedly defeated Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinal last week, marking his first Melbourne loss since 2018. Djokovic was beaten by his typical form as he lost 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), and 6-3 and failed to generate a single break point opportunity during the match. Not only that, but it has also emerged that Djokovic had a temperature the night before the match and refused to go to the doctor.

However, Serbian reporter Luka Nikolic disclosed that the 24-time Grand Slam champion had been suffering from the flu, suggesting that Djokovic’s loss was more than just a bad day at work.

Nikolic revealed it in a recent podcast and said: “He got a fever the night before the semi-finals. Something similar to what Alexander Zverev had. He was sick for three weeks, but some virus caught him again.”

In addition, Nikolic revealed that Djokovic turned down a visit to the doctor to keep his condition a secret from the press. He added: “Some colds get worse. It can’t play well with temperatures. He didn’t want to go to the doctor so that the journalists wouldn’t break it and make a fuss about it. That’s why he played so badly in the first two sets; it was obvious that he was weak and that he couldn’t do it.”
