Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen faced a challenging start at the Australian Open but demonstrated mental fortitude to secure a comeback victory, emphasizing the emotional intensity of the match.
Reflecting on the tough battle, Zheng shared, “I lost the first set and it was really, really difficult. I mean, the opponent, she’s playing really well. That was a really tough match. So emotional. It’s more than just tennis on court.”
The 24-year-old athlete highlighted the struggle at the beginning of the first set, attributing it to overthinking and early breaks. Recognizing the need to change her mindset, Zheng focused on staying present and minimizing mental distractions. She acknowledged the detrimental impact of excessive thinking on her performance, stating, “Because the first set already proved [that thinking] too much is not helping, and you can’t play your best tennis there.”
The shift in approach proved pivotal as Zheng successfully turned the match around. Expressing her satisfaction, she noted, “I’m really happy that I’m able to change that and to win the match at the end.”
Zheng’s insightful reflection on the importance of mental focus and adaptability showcases her maturity on the court. As she progresses in the tournament, her ability to overcome early setbacks and maintain composure bodes well for her future matches.
Looking ahead, Zheng Qinwen gears up for a showdown with Dayana Yastremska, recognizing the significance of keeping her focus against a formidable opponent.
